Choosing the Right Domain Name for Your Business

On September 18, 2009, in Websites, by Webmaster

Choosing a domain name for your small business website can be a challenge, but with these simple guidelines, it will make the process seem like a breeze!

Be Picky About Your Domain Name Extension

Many small business search once for a domain name and when they see the .com version is taken they opt in for a .biz, .us or some other domain name extension.  You always want your primary domain name, the one that will be jockeying for web visitors, to have a .com extension.

I’m not saying anything that isn’t a .com is a bad choice, simply that .com is the most typed in domain extension and if you want to get all the visitors you can, make sure you have a .com in the mix.  This will oftentimes require to you be creative in your choice of domain names.

Whatever you do, search a lot before you make your final picks!  Follow the next guideline to get on the right track.

Make Your Domain Name Short & Relevant.

Short and relevant domain names are easier to remember, bottom line. You will want something that reflects your brand, industry and/or your product/service offering.  Generally, this means you will have to do a lot of searching.

Just head over to TUPOS Domains and begin your search.

Put all of the available domains you find into a spreadsheet or even write them down on paper. Once you’ve found at least 10 different options, go back through your list and prioritize them based on the previous guidelines. Once you’ve identified your top 3 domain name concepts, go ahead and secure them.

Be Cheap, but Don’t be Cheap!

Sounds funny and quite contrary coming from a webmaster, right? :-)

Domain names should run you no more than $15 a year on average for a .com, .net, .org, .biz, etc..

So my point is, if your domain name registrar is going to charge you more than $15 a year for your domain name, don’t waste your time.  Head over to TUPOS Domains and secure your domain.

On the other hand, if your web host offers you a “Free Domain Name”, just pass it on by!  You see, when a domain name is secured, someone pays money to register it.  So it’s either you registering it (owning it), or your web host.  I assure you after helping many small business owners get around shady web hosts and their free domain name tactic, you don’t want to be in that situation.

Keep these these guidelines in mind as you go searching for your business domain name!

Top 3 Reasons to Have a Webmaster

On September 17, 2009, in General, by Webmaster

Webmasters are a commodity these days, it seems. Having your business website up to date with fresh and valuable content is the name of the game when it comes to competing online for business in your industry.

Here are the top 3 reasons to have a true webmaster helping you in business.

  1. You can have an on-demand webmaster “partner”, rather than another “employee”.
Hiring another full-time employee to update your website s virtually pointless. With all the overhead that comes along with a new employee, you may actually be losing money.  You can bypass the unnecessary costs and pay for the webmaster services you need, when you need them!
  2. You can have an expert webmaster rather than a novice programmer.
Our webmasters here are all experts in web based technology.  You don’t have to worry about hiring an employee and getting them trained in the latest techniques for cross-browser compatibility, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, graphics, and more.
  3. You can save time and money.
Our webmasters get things done efficiently and right the first time.  You won’t have to worry about going back and redoing your updates. In these tough economic times, it pays to have a webmaster working on your business website.

All in all a webmaster is just a good thing to have for any small business with a website.  Take a look at the webmaster services we offer and see which webmaster plan works for your needs and budget!
